The mountain is already being difficult.

Steve has been climbing for forty-seven minutes when his left bootlace snaps. The loose ends lie in his hand with the smug finality of a completed decision. Melissa is somewhere ahead. Something large has just moved behind a rock.

A four-hundred-year tradition

The Crossing was never intended to be easy. The merchandise, however, has passed a considerably less demanding inspection by the Museum Curator, two union representatives, and at least one concealed troll.

Every curiosity remembers something small from Steve's journey: the warning nobody quite understood, the observers nobody saw, and the friends who were there all along.
